Full Description
BELEM, BRAZIL (January 27, 2009) The 9th World Social Forum began today in the Amazonian region of Brazil. A march through Belem, the capital of the state of Para, officially marked the beginning of the forum. All participants and organizations took part in the march, displaying their colors, cultures, and symbols. The ceremony of the march signifies the arrival of the 2009 World Social Forum from its previous, 2007 location in Africa.
The enduring message of WSF, "Another World is Possibe", remains the mission of over 100,000 participants organizing over 2,000 activities throughout the week. The week of WSF events will begin tomorrow, January 28, 2009 with Pan-Amazon day, which is the title role of the entire forum this year. Additionally, WSF has committed physical spaces and resources to two initiatives, a youth campsite and a square of convergences. The Youth Campsite, or acampmento da juventude, is a manifestation of creating another world by actualizing mobilization of youth to debate, reflect, and resist. Also, the Square of Convergences, or Praca das Conergencias, allows for alliances and the production of new relationships to proliferate the networks between organizations.
