The Gsott8 - to be read gisotto - is the "G8 underground" that international civil society organisations (more than 100 speakers among activists, experts, trade-unionists, mayors, workers, farmers, small-scale producers and indigenous leaders from more than 40 countries) have organized in Sardinia on the eve of the G8 official summit.
"Sotto" in Italian translates as “below” to mean a bottom-up and more democratic approach to discuss alternatives to the unfolding crisis, including support for local, fair and sustainable economy.
Civil society organisers of the three day long event chose Sardinia as their location, and the geo-mineral park of Sulcis in particular, to signify the limits of global development and to draw attention to the inadequate policies that will be promoted by world leaders a few days later in Abruzzo.
Local initiatives in connection with Gsott8 will also be held in Genoa and Abruzzo, the sites of previous and current G8 summits in Italy. They will be joined by events in other Italian cities.
Gsotto is an event organised within the World Social Forum process.

Il Gsott8 è un evento di organizzazioni della società civile che si è svolto dal 2 al 6 luglio 2009 in Sardegna, nella settimana precendente il G8 in Abruzzo.
Le attività si sono svolte tra le province del Sulcis Iglesiente e del Medio Campidano. Si chiama Gsotto perché si tiene “in basso a sinistra” sia idealmente, sia geograficamente rispetto alla mappa dell’isola. Nasce in Sardegna, nella zona del Parco geominerario del Sulcis, per valorizzare chi, in un tessuto locale tanto simbolico rispetto ai limiti di sistema del cosiddetto sviluppo come quello sardo, e in particolare del Sulcis Iglesiente e Medio Campidano, che già da anni si confrontano concretamente con i limiti del modello di sviluppo industriale basato sullo sfruttamento intensivo delle risorse naturali, e con le alternative produttive, economiche e sociali da contrapporvi dal basso.
Uscire dall'economia del petrolio e dallo sfruttamento insostenibile delle risorse energetiche fossili.
