Indonesia-Jakarta Global Day of Action 26 jan 2008

Jakarta, Indonesia A coalition of Indonesian social movements marched in Jakarta today as part of the International Global Day of Action coordinated. Members of workers organisations, fisher folks, peasants and others, gathered at 2pm at the Indosat building (Jl Thamrin) and marched peacefully to the Presidential Palace asking for an « Indonesia without neoliberalism ». People are oppressed by current economic policies that put land, water and sea under the control of transnational companies and that undermine workers rights. Protesters raised key national issues such as the new investment law, import and liberalisation of food products, labour law, global warming and debt. The demonstration was organised by « Gerak Lawan », the Indonesian movement against nelocolonialism and neoliberalism that brings together workers, farmers, women, fisherfolks, students, anti-debt and environmental organisations. The Indonesian Peasants Union (SPI), member of the international movement La Via Campesina actively took part in this action. Read more…

In Ramallah and Around the World: Gaza at the Heart of Global Day of Action

Events in Ramallah kicked off with a demonstration organized jointly by the Palestinian National Initiative and the Stop the Wall Campaign. Hundreds of protestors - mostly young people, women, and families from Gaza's origin - marched peacefully through Ramallah's central square carrying banners reading "Stop Israeli War Crimes in Gaza" and "Boycott Israeli Apartheid" with the logo of the world social forum. FAO Summit in Rome Civil Society opening Terra Preta parallel Forum

Rome, June 1, 2008. At the eve of the High Level Conference on World Food Security in Rome, farmer, fisherfolk, indigenous peoples and nongovernmental organizations (NGO) have opened the Terra Preta forum and declared a People’s State of Emergency. “Governments and intergovernmental organisations must immediately stop any policies, which lead to violations of the human right to food”, says Maryam Rahmanian of CENESTA, Iran. “Free trade policies have seriously damaged the food system over time, leading to the food crisis that we’re facing today”. Parallel to the official conference, civil society organisations are holding a five day Forum to voice their demands on how to overcome the crisis. Read more…

The High Level Conference on Food Security is looking for a political answer to the severe hunger crisis, which has been manifested in more the 40 food riots over the last three months.
