BELEM, BRAZIL (January 28, 2009) - 100,000 people marched in the city of Belem on the 27th of January, opening the 9th World Social Forum, the largest worldwide meeting of civil society movements, which started in Porto Alegre in 2001. More than 3000 indigenous people from the Amazon region joined the march, displaying their colors, cultures, and symbols. The ceremony culminated in the passage of the testimony from Africa (the location of the previous Forum) to Brasil, where many Quilombos communities - previously African slaves - live today.
The Forum lasts a week with over 2000 seminars, activities and cultural events organised by the participants under the enduring message "Another World is Possibe". The first day is dedicated to the Pan-Amazon themes, from climate change to the unsustainable development model.
